Two unfinished small paintings on the easel

Here are two unfinished small paintings. I enjoy painting the full-length figure in the smaller format.

In the portrait the contrast between the dark head and the light sky, seat, and shirt caught my eye.

What I like about the homemade glass palette you can see in the photo is that it’s easy to clean. A safety razor cleans it in a few minutes. I took a print out of its frame and painted the back of the glass with a neutral tone. It’s bigger than my largest wooden palette but it still fits in my butcher’s tray–barely. The butcher’s tray preserves colors longer than simply leaving the palette out overnight. It’s not ideal because the colors still dry, but this simple method is effective enough.
